“Climate change was in every story I covered—water, wildlife, hurricanes. It was everywhere.”
— Jessica Meszaros, Environmental Reporter, WUSF NPR

Jessica Meszaros never set out to cover climate change. But as a longtime environmental reporter with WUSF Public Media (NPR), she quickly realized that nearly every issue facing Florida’s ecosystems—water quality, red tide, development, heat, hurricanes—was tied to the climate crisis.

Her reporting began shifting toward the stories of people and communities responding to these challenges—not just surviving, but adapting. That is where the Climate Adaptation Center (CAC) plays a critical role.

Founded by atmospheric scientist Dr. Bob Bunting, the CAC connects global climate science with local community needs. Based in Sarasota, Florida, the organization works with civic leaders, emergency managers, and media professionals like Jessica to help interpret and act on the accelerating risks of climate change.

Jessica stresses the importance of having community-based experts. National reports and federal data are essential—but local knowledge is just as powerful, especially in a state as vulnerable as Florida.

“When we talk about national climate issues, we can finally have local voices in the conversation.”

Florida faces immense climate risks. Infrastructure built decades ago wasn’t designed for stronger hurricanes or rapid sea-level rise. At the same time, many Floridians are already experiencing extreme weather, flooding, and ecosystem collapse.

The CAC helps bridge this gap between science and local action. Through public briefings, school programs, municipal partnerships, and civic outreach, the CAC is helping Florida build resilience—community by community.

Jessica’s reporting reveals what’s working: grassroots climate organizing, forward-thinking infrastructure reforms, and public education that leads to smart policy. These are real examples of climate adaptation—solutions that reduce risk and create opportunity.

Supporting the Climate Adaptation Center means supporting that momentum. Donors make it possible for the CAC to expand its research, educate the public, and guide decision-makers across Florida.

Every dollar helps communities plan smarter, respond faster, and build a future grounded in reality—not reaction.
