Adapt Now: Secure Your Future!
At the 2025 Hurricane Season Forecast, hosted by The Climate Adaptation Center (CAC) at USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus, David Kotok, Strategic Advisor at Cumberland Advisors, delivered a powerful analysis of the economic differences between hurricanes and pandemics. While pandemics cause tragic loss of life, hurricanes devastate infrastructure and property, resulting in billions in uninsured losses.
Kotok’s insights, grounded in his research and new book on the economics of pandemics, underscore the unique risks posed by climate-driven disasters. Unlike pandemics, hurricanes do not trigger a Federal Reserve response, making local adaptation and preparedness critical. In 2024 alone, hurricanes caused $127 billion in damages, highlighting the urgent need for proactive solutions.
The CAC stands at the forefront of climate adaptation, providing essential research, education, and community engagement. Their work empowers organizations and individuals to understand climate risks and take effective action. By bringing together experts like Kotok and institutions such as Cumberland Advisors and USF Sarasota-Manatee Campus, the CAC fosters collaboration and drives innovation in emergency preparedness.
The story of 15,000 Honduran workers aiding post-Katrina recovery illustrates the human element of adaptation—resilient communities are built by collective effort. Supporting the CAC means enabling more adaptation projects, lowering risks, and creating opportunities for a safer, more resilient future.
Your donation to the CAC directly funds research, education, and on-the-ground adaptation initiatives. Help us expand our impact—support the CAC and be part of the solution to climate risk.
